Carmen Electra Happy to Work the Engagement Pole
If you pushed the snooze button instead of listening to Ryan Seacrest's morning show on KIIS-FM, then you probably don't know that marriage engagements are like stripper poles and that Carmen Electra doesn’t much care for paperwork. (Like they say, the early bird catches the, um, writhing, squirmy bit of information.)
While we had already told you that Carmen is in no rush to marry fiancé Rob Patterson, we didn’t know that her hesitation was due not to the fact that she'd been married twice before but to an aversion to filing.
Confused? Here's how Carm tells it...
Carmen Electra Suits Naked Wrestling
Carmen Electra has the Naked Women's Wrestling League up against the highly stylized ropes.
As tantalizing as that might sound, what it actually means is that the former Baywatch babe is suing the NWWL for breach of contract, negligence and unfair business practices, claiming that she was never paid her agreed-upon price for a handful of live event appearances. (View the complaint.)
According to documents filed Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Electra was supposed to receive $400,000 and a cut of the proceeds from DVD sales and pay-per-view fees for four hosting appearances and her company, Electra Blue, has to date only been paid $100,000.
They entered into the deal on Jan. 26, 2004, per the complaint.
Meanwhile, Toronto-based NWWL Productions president Howard Mann said in a statement released to E! News that he entered into no such agreement with the erstwhile Playboy Playmate, calling her lawsuit "malicious and highly damaging."
"I feel her claims are nothing more than a desperate cry for attention," Mann said. "Carmen's financial issues are are simply not my concern...I am currently engaging California counsel to actively defend my position, and I will be seeking damages for defamation, slander and malicious persecution."
Electra has also accused the NWWL and several other companies and individuals, including Erotic Wrestling Productions, Full Speed Productions and Virtcom Enterprises, of unlawfully trading on her good name to promote the league, whether by referring to it as "Carmen Electra's NWWL" or stating "Carmen Electra Presents NWWL."
The 35-year-old actress' suit also states that the plaintiffs used her "name, voice, image, likeness and/or attributes" without her consent for the covers of such illustrious DVD titles as Operation Naked Storm, Bush vs. Hussein, Tag Team Dream and Twin Peaks.
Electra, who famously spoofed herself in Scary Movie and wants to prevent further damage to her value as a "sought-after spokesperson and commercial actress," is seeking at least $3.3 million in damages, plus attorneys' fees, according to the suit.
Her list of allegations also includes violation of statutory and common-law right of publicity, breach of guaranty, federal unfair competition, quantum meruit (Latin for "pay me what you promised even if it wasn't carved in stone"), open book account and unjust enrichment.
Since hanging up her swimsuit back in 1998, Electra has had big-and-bigger roles in Starsky & Hutch, Cheaper By the Dozen 2, Scary Movie 4, Date Movie and Epic Movie, and either she or her voice has shown up on numerous TV shows, including the late WB drama Summerland, King of the Hill, American Dad, Hope & Faith, Monk, Sci-Fi Channel's Tripping the Rift and former costar Pam Anderson's short-lived sitcom Stacked.
And, Electra starred with ex-hubby Dave Navarro in 'Til Death Do Us Part: Carmen and Dave on MTV, where good relationships do, in fact, go to die.
Vegas Pulls Pam Out of a Hat
If one Baywatch babe can't get the job done, dust yourself off and hire another.
Pamela Anderson has been tapped to replace Carmen Electra as a special guest star in the new Las Vegas show The Beauty of Magic, to be hosted by Dutch illusionist Hans Klok at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino (formerly the Aladdin).
While the recently divorced Electra said at a press conference last week that she would be spending three months with the show, promising a bevy of "sultry surprises," the chief executive of the show's producer, Stage Entertainment, said that there were too many scheduling conflicts.
Instead, it was Anderson who popped out of a box at Planet Hollywood's Extra lounge Thursday to announce that she was on board.
"My kids are going to love this," Anderson, who will be bringing her two sons to stay with her during the 12-week gig, told the crowd. "This is my dream of being a Vegas showgirl come true…Another one off my list."
A source close to the production told the Las Vegas Review-Journal, meanwhile, that Electra was claustrophobic and didn't think she would be able to confine herself within Klok's onstage apparatuses, such as Anderson's debut box, for very long.
Electra found the tricks "too difficult," Klok told the newspaper, and Anderson wanted to do "big magic and difficult magic. She's gonna do some dangerous stuff."
Casino owner Robert Earl called Anderson "my choice from the beginning" but initial attempts to sign her didn't work out because of her kids' schedule.
The Beauty of Magic will now open June 2 instead of May 12, to give the star of the upcoming Blonde and Blonder more time to prepare.
Earlier this month, Anderson vacationed in Hawaii with sons Brandon and Dylan Jagger—and ex-hubby Tommy Lee—and then traveled to Russia, where she cohosted the MTV Russia Film Awards Apr. 19 and visited an orphanage near Moscow.
"It was really eye-opening—sad but inspiring to see these kids happy despite having nothing—really nothing including parents…it really makes you reach inside—know how blessed we are—and know how much of a blessing it is that we can brighten a child's day," the actress wrote on her Website Sunday.
Completely Parted: Carmen & Dave
Luckily for Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro, they were able to part ways without having to invoke that " 'til death" clause.
A Los Angeles judge signed off Tuesday on the estranged couple's divorce, officially splitting the former 'Til Death Do Us Part: Carmen & Dave duo into separate entities.
Electra filed for divorce on Aug. 10, citing the celebrity special, irreconcilable differences, as the reason for the breakup. Her move came a little less than a month after she and Navarro announced that they had "amicably separated," and a day after it was reported that her musician hubby was dating porn star Jenna Jameson.
But despite the fact that Electra and Navarro were a high-profile pair, their uncoupling went off relatively smoothly, at least as far as the legal system is concerned. They had no children and agreed that there was no community property to split up, and neither petitioned the other for spousal support, according to court documents obtained by E! Online. [View court documents in PDF format.]
All of which must have been a nice change for Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert Schnider, who also happens to be presiding over the West Coast leg of the Anna Nicole Smith paternity battle.
Electra and Navarro tied the knot on Nov. 22, 2003 in front of an MTV camera crew, which documented their courtship leading up to the big day for 'Til Death Do Us Part, a concept that seemed believable while watching the fastidiously made-up lovebirds interact on camera.
Who knew then that teaming up to star in an unscripted relationship series on MTV was akin to inking an agreement to get divorced in the near future? (Certainly not Nick and Jessica or Travis and Shanna.)
But the show must go on. According to Us Weekly, Electra has signed up to costar in a Las Vegas magic/variety show with Dutch magician Hans Klok, which will play out at the future site of the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino.
The sometime Pussycat Doll will get to apply her song-and-dance skills onstage, allowing her to do "what she loves most to do," a source told Us. Electra will do five shows a week for 13 weeks, starting May 12.
Navarro, meanwhile, teamed up last year with former Jane's Addiction mates Stephen Perkins and Chris Chaney to form a new band, The Panic Channel, which is fronted by singer Steve Isaacs. The alt-rockers, who went on tour in December with Rock Star: Supernova's title band, released their debut, (ONe), in August. Last month they announced that Powerman 5000 bassist Siggy Sjursen will be replacing Chaney.
